The person behind every treatment

Dr James Corcoran, Founder and Clinical Director

He does not delegate. Every procedure at this clinic is carried out by him, from the first consultation through to the final review. The doctor you meet is the doctor who treats you, every time.

Dr James Corcoran, Founder and Clinical Director of The Plasma Doctor, Warrington

The non-negotiables

A medical doctor running an aesthetics clinic means a different set of rules. These are the ones that do not move, whoever is asking.

Doctor delivered, always

Every treatment is carried out by Dr Corcoran personally. Not a nurse, not a therapist. The doctor who consults is the doctor who treats.

Evidence before equipment

Devices are bought on the strength of peer-reviewed evidence and proper clinical trials. No replicas, no grey-market imports.

Honest before anything else

If a treatment will not do what you are hoping for, you will be told so at the consultation. Nobody is treated to fill an appointment.

Proper clinical records

History, photographs and treatment notes are kept securely and properly, the way a medical practice keeps them.

Registered and indemnified

GMC registered, fully indemnified, and qualified for every treatment on the list. Check the register if you want to.

Warm, not clinical

A consultation should feel like talking to someone who listens, is straight with you, and is in no hurry. The medicine is serious. The room does not have to be.

Two careers, one face

Most people qualify once. He qualified as a dentist, operated on faces and jaws in oral and maxillofacial surgery, then went back to university and qualified again as a doctor. Select any stage to see what it is.

Bachelor of Dental Surgery
University of London

Where it started. A dental degree is a full clinical training in the structures of the face and jaw, and it is the reason his working knowledge of facial anatomy predates his interest in aesthetics by decades.

BDS is the primary dental qualification in the UK.
Fellowship in Dental Surgery
Royal College of Surgeons

Awarded while he was working in oral and maxillofacial surgery, the specialty that deals with the face, jaws and neck. This is the point where facial anatomy stopped being something learned from a book and became something worked on daily.

FDSRCS is a surgical fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons.
Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery
A second full degree

Having already qualified and practised as a dental surgeon, he returned to university to study medicine from the beginning. Most clinicians do one of these degrees. He holds both.

MBChB is the primary medical qualification in the UK, and the degree that leads to GMC registration.
Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons
Postgraduate surgical fellowship

His second Royal College fellowship, and his second in surgery, this time on the medical side of his training rather than the dental one.

FRCS is the senior surgical qualification of the Royal College of Surgeons.
Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists
Postgraduate anaesthetic fellowship

Anaesthetists are the doctors responsible for keeping patients safe and stable during procedures, and for recognising early when something is going wrong. That training is the reason risk is discussed openly here rather than skirted around.

FRCA is the senior qualification of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
Over 30 years in the NHS
Consultant Anaesthetist and Clinical Director

The last 14 of those years as a Consultant Anaesthetist in a large NHS teaching hospital, and 10 of them simultaneously as Clinical Director, responsible for clinical standards and the quality of care across departments.

Clinical Director is the doctor accountable for clinical governance in a hospital department.
Postgraduate Diploma in Cosmetic Medicine
Awarded with Distinction

His formal entry into cosmetic medicine as a discipline in its own right, rather than something picked up on a weekend course. Distinction is the highest classification available.

PgDip is a postgraduate diploma, a taught qualification below master’s level.
Master of Science in Cosmetic Medicine
University of South Wales, awarded with Merit

His thesis was on the use of ultrasound in cosmetic medicine, which is the practice of imaging beneath the skin before treating it rather than working from surface anatomy alone.

MSc (Cos Med) is written exactly this way. It is not an MSc in Aesthetic Medicine, and that wording is incorrect wherever it appears.

The treatments he reaches for

His interest is in treatments that provoke the body into repairing itself, rather than ones that simply fill or freeze. Regenerative first, replacement second, and only where it will actually help.

NeoGen plasma

Nitrogen plasma for skin regeneration, texture and surface laxity.

PRP

Platelet-rich plasma, using the growth factors in your own blood.

Polynucleotides

DNA-derived injectable, used for inflammation and repair.

HIFU

Focused ultrasound for non-surgical lifting and tightening.

Endolift laser

Subdermal laser for jowls, jawline and neck laxity.

Dermal fillers

For volume loss and contour, where volume is genuinely the problem.

Anti-wrinkle treatments

For lines and wrinkles, discussed properly at consultation first.

If a treatment is not right for you, he will tell you. That is not a slogan. It is the direct consequence of not needing to fill a diary.

Your first appointment is a proper clinical consultation, not a sales pitch. He will look at your skin, tell you honestly what he thinks will work, and say so if the answer is nothing.
