Acne and breakouts
Supportive care, and honesty about what we do not do
Supportive, medically led skin care for acne-prone and post-inflammatory skin in Warrington. For active, moderate to severe acne, we work alongside your GP or dermatologist. Where we excel is calming inflammation, supporting healthy skin, and treating the marks acne leaves behind.
What causes acne and breakouts?
Acne develops when hair follicles become blocked with excess sebum and dead skin cells, creating an environment where bacteria naturally present on the skin can multiply and trigger inflammation.
The forms it takes
Acne ranges considerably in presentation and severity. Comedonal acne, blackheads and whiteheads, is generally mild and driven mainly by blocked pores. Inflammatory acne, including papules and pustules, involves a stronger immune response and visible redness. Cystic or nodular acne is the most severe form, with deep, painful lesions that carry a higher risk of scarring.
Hormonal fluctuations are a major driver of adult acne, particularly around the jawline and chin, and can affect people well beyond their teenage years. Stress, certain medications, some skincare and haircare products, and genetics also all play a role.
For active, moderate to severe acne, particularly cystic or nodular acne, we recommend starting with your GP or a dermatologist, who can properly assess and prescribe where appropriate. Our role is to support skin health alongside that care, and to treat the post-inflammatory marks, redness and scarring acne often leaves behind.
How we can help
For mild to moderate, settled or acne-prone skin, polynucleotide treatment can help calm inflammation and support the skin’s own repair processes. Once active breakouts have settled, NeoGen plasma can improve overall skin texture, tone and resilience. If your main concern is the marks, pitting or texture change left behind by past acne, our dedicated scarring and skin texture page covers this in detail.
If you are unsure whether your skin needs GP input first or would benefit from supportive treatment now, Dr Corcoran is happy to talk it through honestly at a no-obligation consultation.
Treatments we recommend alongside your care
These treatments support skin health and calm inflammation. They are not a substitute for GP or dermatologist-led treatment of active, moderate to severe acne.
Polynucleotide treatment
Polynucleotides work at a cellular level to calm inflammation and support tissue repair, making them a good option for chronically inflamed or acne-prone skin once any active flare has been assessed. Often used to support overall skin health between periods of active breakout.

Once active breakouts have settled, NeoGen helps renew the skin’s surface, improving texture, tone and resilience, and reducing the visibility of early post-inflammatory marks. Best suited to acne-prone skin that is currently calm rather than actively flaring.

If your main concern is the marks, pitting or texture change left behind by past breakouts rather than active acne itself, our dedicated scarring and skin texture page covers treatment options including microneedling, PRP and NeoGen in detail.
Advanced skincare
Obagi Medical and Elenzia, for what happens between appointments. Discussed at consultation alongside whatever your GP or dermatologist has already put in place.
Is this the right starting point?
Dr Corcoran confirms suitability properly at consultation, but this is a fair starting point.
We are likely a good fit if
- You have mild to moderate, currently settled or acne-prone skin.
- You are already under GP or dermatologist care for active breakouts and want complementary skin support.
- Your main concern is post-inflammatory redness, texture or early marks rather than active flares.
- You want to support long-term skin health between periods of breakout.
Start with your GP or a dermatologist if
- You have active, widespread, moderate to severe acne that has not yet been assessed.
- You have painful cystic or nodular acne, which carries a higher risk of scarring if untreated.
- You suspect a hormonal or medical cause that needs proper investigation.
- You are currently on prescription acne medication, including isotretinoin. Please tell us at consultation.
Everything you need to know
We do not prescribe acne medication. For active, moderate to severe acne, your GP or a dermatologist is the right first step. We support skin health alongside that care, and treat the marks acne leaves behind.
Active acne is ongoing breakouts and inflammation, which needs medical assessment. Acne scarring is the pitting or texture change left behind once breakouts have settled, which our scarring and skin texture treatments address.
Hormonal acne is best assessed by your GP, who can investigate the underlying cause. Once you have a management plan in place, we can support overall skin health alongside it.
Dr Corcoran, personally, from the first consultation through to your review. There are no technicians at The Plasma Doctor acting on his behalf.
Then that is the honest answer and you will not be charged for a treatment that was never right for you. Dr Corcoran will explain what to ask for and, where it helps, what to come back for once the acne itself is under control.
