Individual results vary. These are shown to illustrate the kind of change NeoGen can produce, not to promise a specific outcome, and they should not be read as typical. Skin, age, sun history and the energy level chosen all change what is achievable.

What can NeoGen treat?

Because the whole surface is treated at one setting, several concerns are addressed in the same appointment rather than booked one after another. That is the practical case for it if there is more than one thing you would like changed.

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

The regenerative response lays down new collagen over the weeks after treatment. Fine lines soften first. Established lines change over a course, and deep static lines are not what this treats.

  • Skin texture and tone

The whole face is treated at one energy, so quality lifts evenly rather than in the patches a spot treatment leaves behind. This is the change most people notice first.

  • Acne scarring

Scarred tissue remodels gradually across a course of sessions. The realistic outcome is a scar that catches the light less, not a scar that has gone.

  • Skin laxity and sagging

Firmness at the surface, on the lower face, neck and décolletage. It works on the skin itself, so where the laxity is structural rather than surface, Dr Corcoran will tell you so and point you elsewhere.

  • Pigmentation and sun damage

The treated surface sheds and renews, which evens out the discolouration that years of sun leave at the surface. Pigment sitting deeper needs a different answer.

  • Stretch marks

The handpiece works on the body as readily as the face, over a course of sessions. Newer marks that still have colour in them respond better than old silvery ones.

Whether NeoGen is the right answer for your skin is a clinical judgement, made face to face. If it is not, he will say so.

How nitrogen plasma works

The outer layer of skin is left intact to begin with and acts as a natural dressing while regeneration happens underneath. Nothing is broken and nothing bleeds. There are no needles. That is a genuinely different mechanism rather than a marketing distinction, and it is why one treatment can reach several different concerns at once instead of one at a time.

It works on the eyelid area, which a good many devices cannot go near, and on the body as readily as the face.

The figures beside this come from the NeoGen EVO patient leaflet issued by Energist, reference SD1-237 issue 3, and from published studies of nitrogen plasma skin regeneration. They describe the treatment in general. Yours is written down for you at consultation.

NeoGen and skin changes around menopause

Menopause speeds up collagen loss. Studies led by Mark Brincat in the 1980s, summarised in later reviews, report that up to 30% of skin collagen is lost in the first five years after menopause, and a 2005 review in Climacteric linked the loss closely to oestrogen deficiency (review record). NeoGen is a collagen-stimulating treatment, designed to support collagen renewal, firmness, texture and tone across the whole face and neck.

Those are two separate facts. We have found no published trial of NeoGen in menopausal women, and the manufacturer says NeoGen is not a treatment for menopause or its hormonal causes. What Dr Corcoran can offer is his opinion: that NeoGen suits many women whose skin has changed around menopause, because it is designed to work on collagen across the whole face and neck and the other treatments can be added for what it does not cover. The NeoGen device we use won Best Treatment at the Menopause in Aesthetics Awards 2025. That recognition is for the device, not for this clinic.

Three energy levels, and how yours is chosen

A lighter session

For skin that mainly needs its quality lifting rather than its structure changed. Expect improvement in texture and tone and a reduction in fine wrinkles. Not deep lines, and not scarring.

This is the setting to ask about if you cannot disappear for a week. Lower energy treatments often need no real downtime, which is the trade: less asked of your diary, less changed in one visit. Anyone telling you a plasma treatment is a lunchtime procedure with no consequences at any setting is not being straight with you.

DowntimeVery little. In a controlled trial at this energy, redness lasted around 12 hours and flaking and temporary darkening up to 48. Every effect was mild and resolved without lasting change.
Typical courseThree sessions, roughly three weeks apart.
Works onTexture, tone, fine wrinkles.

A medium session

The setting most of the published results were produced at, and the one most people mean when they talk about the treatment. Enough energy to prompt a genuine regenerative response across the surface, at a recovery you can plan around if you know it is coming.

Usually run as a course rather than a single visit. The results higher up this page at this level were produced over two or three sessions four weeks apart, and each of those captions says which.

DowntimeRedness, then flaking of the outer layer. Published protocols put it at about three to four days, with most people back at work immediately or the next day.
Typical courseA course, sessions around three weeks apart.
Works onTexture, tone and fine lines, and it starts to reach deeper wrinkles, acne scarring and pigmentation.

A deeper session

At higher energies the treatment reaches deep wrinkles, acne scarring and pigmentation as well as everything the lighter settings do. The higher energy is concentrated on the areas that need it, with a lower setting across the rest of the face, so it still runs as a course rather than a single visit.

It is not automatically the right answer because it is the strongest. It asks the most of you in return, and Dr Corcoran will say so plainly if a lighter setting would get you where you want to be.

DowntimeThe most of the three. Published protocols put a single high energy pass at about five to seven days and a double pass at six to ten, the surface shedding across days five to ten. Some residual redness can linger for weeks.
Typical courseFewer sessions than the lighter settings. How many is decided at consultation.
Works onDeep wrinkles, acne scarring and pigmentation, alongside texture and tone.

Which level suits you is a clinical decision, made with you at consultation and not sold to you over a phone.

NeoGen compared with plasma pen, Morpheus8 and HIFU

How NeoGen plasma compares with the other energy treatments people ask about
What we are comparing NeoGen plasma Plasma pen Morpheus8 HIFU
How the energy is delivered Nitrogen turned into plasma, in measured pulses Plasma arced to the skin one point at a time Radiofrequency through fine needles Focused ultrasound
Where it lands Uniformly across the whole surface Separated dots, one small area at a time At a set depth below the surface At focal points deep in the tissue
Is the skin broken No. No needles, no bleeding The surface is marked at each point Yes, by the needles No
What happens to the outer layer Stays on as a natural dressing, then sheds Crusts at each point Largely spared Untouched
Usually chosen for Texture, tone, fine lines, surface laxity and pigmentation, together Tightening one small defined area Deeper remodelling from below Non-surgical lifting
Can be used on the eyelids Yes Commonly used there No No
Energy level chosen per patient Yes, 0.5 to 4.0 joules Limited Depth and energy both set Depth set by the transducer

Neither is better in the abstract, because they do different jobs. A pen treats a place on your face. NeoGen treats your skin. Morpheus8 works from below and is often the right answer where the concern is deep and structural.

What NeoGen does that none of the others do is treat the entire surface at one intensity, chosen for you, in a single pass across the face, and reach texture, tone, fine lines, surface laxity and pigmentation in the same appointment rather than one at a time. That, and the fact that it can be taken right up to the eyelid, is why it is the machine in this clinic.

The longer versions

Dr Corcoran offers NeoGen and does not offer Morpheus8 or a plasma pen, and you should read the comparison with that in mind. The posts above say the same thing at more length, and describe the alternatives as their own practitioners would.

Recovery, suitability and the risks

Before the dayCome with clean skin and no make-up. Studies of this treatment exclude people who have used tretinoin, acid exfoliants or oral retinoids recently, or who have had a peel or a laser on the same area, so those are the things to declare early rather than on the day.
On the dayYour skin is cleansed, and the handpiece is passed across the area in measured pulses. No needles, nothing broken, no bleeding. A full face takes 30 to 60 minutes. Dr Corcoran does it himself, start to finish.
How it feelsAt lower energies most people describe slight discomfort rather than pain, and it is often done with no anaesthetic at all. Afterwards the skin feels warm and tight, like mild sunburn. For a higher energy treatment, pain relief is agreed with you before the day rather than improvised on it.
Straight afterwardsYour skin will look pink. That is erythema and it is expected, not a complication. After a higher energy treatment it can also look a little brown as the treated surface begins to lift. Ice in short spells helps the first day. If your treatment needs more than a numbing cream, arrange a lift home.
The first 48 hoursThe outer layer stays intact and works as a biological dressing while regeneration happens underneath. Nothing is open, which is the meaningful difference from a treatment that strips the surface away on the day.
Days three to tenThe treated surface flakes and sheds, and new skin appears underneath. Where it lands in that range is set by the energy level: a day or two at the lightest settings, three to four days at medium, days five to ten after a high energy session. Let it come away on its own. Picking is the one thing that turns an ordinary recovery into a problem.
The weeks afterChange begins immediately and keeps developing. The manufacturer’s patient literature puts continued improvement at up to twelve months, as new collagen and elastin form.
AftercareA bland moisturiser or ointment, often, while it heals. Then sun protection, and more of it than you think: high factor sunscreen, a hat, and shade, not just through the peeling but for months. Skin that has just regenerated pigments easily, and sun is the one thing that will undo what you paid for.
A NeoGen plasma treatment underway in the treatment room at The Plasma Doctor, Warrington

Worth having in beforehand

  • A bland, unperfumed moisturiser or ointment, and more of it than you think you need.
  • A high factor sunscreen you will actually put on, and a hat with a brim.
  • Nothing exfoliating. No acids, no scrubs, no retinol, until you are told otherwise.

Often a good fit if

  • You have more than one thing going on at once. Texture, tone and pigmentation together is exactly what this treatment is built for.
  • You want a change in the skin itself rather than a surface effect that needs repeating every few weeks.
  • You can plan your diary around a recovery, once you know honestly what that recovery is.
  • You have already tried treatments that work on one concern at a time and found them piecemeal.

Tell us at consultation if

  • You have a fixed date coming up. A wedding in three weeks changes the answer, and sometimes the answer is to wait.
  • You are expecting one session and a finished result. That is not how a regenerative treatment works.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • You have an active skin infection, take any medication that affects healing, or have a history of scarring badly.
  • Anything else about your health you are not sure is relevant. It usually is, and the list above is a prompt rather than the whole of it.

If NeoGen is not the right answer, the alternatives Dr Corcoran would actually discuss are Endolift where the concern is structural rather than surface, HIFU for non-surgical lifting, and microneedling or PRP where something gentler is enough.

A page that lists only benefits is selling to you rather than informing you. With NeoGen the outer layer of skin is left intact, which is why the recovery is gentler than treatments that leave an open surface, but it is still a real procedure with a real recovery.

What published studies report, and what you should therefore expect to hear about, is redness and swelling, scaling and peeling as the surface sheds, dryness and itching while it does, and temporary darkening of the treated skin that settles on its own. At higher energies there are also reports of the surface lifting further than intended and of healing taking longer, particularly around the edges of the face. Scarring is rare and has been reported.

What that means for your skin, and what could go wrong for you rather than for somebody else, is what the consultation is for. Dr Corcoran goes through it with you before you book, not on the day.

Why the hands matter here

Dr Corcoran spent fourteen years as a Consultant Anaesthetist. That is the training that teaches you to notice early when something is going wrong rather than after it has, and it is an unusual thing to bring to a room where energy is being delivered into somebody’s face.

He also chooses the energy level. Most of what appears on a risk list for this treatment is a function of how hard it was run, and that decision is made by the person who then carries it out.

A great deal of the lasering and injecting done in this industry is done by people who did a short course. Most clinicians qualify once. He qualified as a dentist, operated on faces and jaws in maxillofacial surgery, then went back to university and qualified again as a doctor, then in surgery, then in anaesthesia, then in cosmetic medicine. Thirty years of that was in the NHS, fourteen as a Consultant Anaesthetist and ten of those simultaneously as Clinical Director, accountable for clinical standards across departments.

There are no technicians here acting on his behalf. Your consultation, your treatment and your review are all with him.

It matters more on this treatment than on most. NeoGen is not a device with one setting and a protocol to follow. Somebody has to decide how much energy your skin should take, over how many sessions, and whether the answer today is none at all. That is a clinical judgement about your face, made by the person who will then carry it out, and it is not something a consultation with one person and a treatment with another can give you.

I wanted a machine I could take across someone’s whole face and know it was doing the same work everywhere, at an intensity I chose rather than one the device chose for me. That is what NeoGen does, and that is why it is the one I bought.

NeoGen questions, answered

NeoGen Plasma can improve skin texture, tone, fine lines, surface laxity and pigmentation, treating several concerns together. Whether it suits your skin, and at what intensity, is confirmed at consultation.

NeoGen at The Plasma Doctor starts from £960. The exact figure depends on the area treated and the intensity of the treatment, and you are given a precise quote at consultation.

Yes, and the extent depends on the intensity of the treatment chosen. A lighter session involves less downtime than a deeper, more intensive one, which is one reason the treatment can be adapted to what you are able to accommodate.

Usually three to six, depending on the area being treated, the condition of your skin and what you want to achieve. Sessions are spaced a few weeks apart so the skin has time to respond between them, and higher energy work needs fewer of them than lighter work. Your plan is decided at consultation rather than sold to you as a package.

Nitrogen plasma does not work by seeking out a colour in the skin, which is the mechanism that makes some lasers risky on darker tones. It heats the surface it is passed across regardless of pigment. Lower energy nitrogen plasma has been studied specifically in darker skin types and reported as effective there, with mild and short-lived side effects.

That is not the same as saying it suits every skin, and we are not going to tell you it does. Temporary darkening after treatment is a recognised effect and it matters more on some skins than others. Dr Corcoran assesses your skin type and tone at consultation and will tell you honestly if this is not your treatment.

No. A plasma pen creates small individual points of controlled thermal injury on the skin surface, treating spot by spot. NeoGen converts nitrogen gas into plasma and delivers it in measured pulses across a whole area, regenerating the full surface uniformly. The mechanisms and the results are different.

No, and we would rather be precise than blur the terms. Cold plasma refers specifically to non-thermal plasma. NeoGen uses controlled nitrogen plasma energy with a thermal effect that is central to how it regenerates the skin. If you are interested in plasma for your skin, NeoGen is what we would discuss with you.

Morpheus8 delivers radiofrequency energy into the deeper layers through fine needles, working from below the surface. NeoGen delivers nitrogen plasma in pulses uniformly across the skin surface, with the outer layer left intact initially as a natural dressing. They are different mechanisms suited to different concerns.

At The Plasma Doctor, NeoGen Plasma is delivered personally by Dr James Corcoran at our Warrington clinic.

69b Sankey Street, Warrington WA1 1SL, in the town centre and close to Sankey Street parking. Treatments run Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10am to 8pm, by appointment only. Reception takes calls Monday to Saturday from 8.30am.

In Dr Corcoran’s opinion it suits many women whose skin has changed around menopause, because it is designed to support collagen renewal across the whole face and neck. Suitability is a clinical decision made at consultation. NeoGen treats the skin, not menopause or its symptoms.

It depends on the concern. Skin boosters such as polynucleotides, Jalupro or Profhilo can support skin quality and hydration, microneedling can refine texture, HIFU or Endolift can tighten beneath the skin, and fillers can replace lost volume. Dr Corcoran plans the order and timing at your consultation.
