Jowls TreatmentNon-surgical options that actually work
Jowl development is one of the most common concerns we treat. The good news is that effective, long-lasting solutions are available without surgery, general anaesthetic or lengthy recovery.
What causes jowls and what can be done?
Jowls develop gradually as the structural support beneath the skin changes with age. Understanding why they form helps explain why certain treatments work and others do not.
Why do jowls develop?
Jowls form when the skin and soft tissue of the lower face lose their natural support and begin to descend. This is driven by a combination of factors that all change with age: collagen and elastin production slows down, which means the skin becomes less firm and less able to hold its position; the fat pads in the cheeks begin to descend and deflate; and the ligaments that hold facial tissue in place gradually weaken. The result is a loss of jawline definition and the characteristic sagging at the sides of the chin and along the lower face.
Genetics play a significant role, as does significant weight loss in some patients, which can accelerate the loss of facial volume and support. Sun damage over time also breaks down collagen and contributes to earlier jowl development.
The important thing to understand is that jowls are not simply loose skin. They are the result of changes at multiple layers of the face, which is why the most effective treatments address the structural tissue beneath the surface, not just the skin itself.
Do creams or exercises help?
Topical products and facial exercises are not able to meaningfully address established jowls. No cream can rebuild the collagen and structural support that has been lost, and there is no peer-reviewed evidence to support facial exercises as a treatment for jowl development. If you have noticeable jowls, you need a treatment that works at the tissue level.
