How acne scars form
Acne scarring develops when inflammatory acne lesions damage the dermis, the deeper layer of skin responsible for its structure. As the skin attempts to repair itself, it sometimes produces too little collagen, leaving a depressed or pitted scar, or too much, creating a raised scar. The type of scar you have, ice pick, boxcar, rolling or hypertrophic, determines the most appropriate treatment approach.
Poor skin texture more generally can result from enlarged pores, sun damage, keratosis pilaris, previous skin infections, or simply the gradual decline in cellular turnover that comes with age.
Acne scarring and uneven texture respond exceptionally well to regenerative treatments. These are concerns that were once considered very difficult to address without surgery. That is no longer the case.
Why creams alone will not do it
Topical skincare products work at the surface level. Acne scars and structural texture irregularities exist in the deeper dermis, where creams and serums cannot reach.
